Plot Summary
What Color Is Your Parachute? 2019: A Practical Manual for Job-Hunters and Career-Changers is a business and self-help book by Richard Nelson Bolles. The book, rewritten and republished annually, offers practical advice and tips for jobseekers and those looking for a career change in new fields. First published in 1970 and most recently in August 2018, this book is enduringly popular with readers due its lighthearted but pragmatic tone. Bolles himself had a variety of jobs over his lifetime, from chemical engineering to Episcopal ministry. He was also a member of Mensa, the high-IQ society. He died in 2017 at ninety years old.

Although there are numerous editions of What Color Is Your Parachute?, the core message always remains the same: it’s entirely possible to change careers and reinvent yourself so long as you have a plan. Before you even begin searching for a new job or career, you must first identify what you are good at and what you enjoy, and then you should find the right network of people to introduce you to promising opportunities.

Bolles believes that what we’re best at and what we’re good at generally coincide. For example, skilled writers usually enjoy writing, and those who excel at solving problems generally love tackling them. If you’re going to change careers, you should aim for one that will give you satisfaction and opportunities to shine.

We should ask three things of ourselves: what transferable skills do we have, where do we want to put them to use, and how can we go about finding those avenues? Clear questions offer clear directions to achieving our goals. However, it’s also important that we’re willing to invest the time and energy into this search, because no one will do it for us.
In keeping with the book’s positive tone, Bolles reminds us that we can all find a dream job. Nevertheless, the book is updated each year because the challenges that jobhunters face change all the time. What Color Is Your Parachute? doesn’t encourage readers to be reckless; rather, Bolles is honest about the job market and its current difficulties.

The 2019 edition begins by considering how long the average job search takes. It takes longer to find a job now than ever before, but many of these jobs are transient and temporary. People are working harder to find jobs that don’t last long. However, there are more jobs out there than we realize. We’re simply looking for them the wrong way. Jobseekers use outdated search methods to find work, which is why it takes so long.

Bolles then compares the different ways of job searching. There’s the “Traditional Approach,” which involves spending endless hours browsing the web and job listings for work, and then sending out countless impersonal resumes. Instead of this, we should try the “Parachute Approach,” which begins with ourselves.

The Parachute Approach is the concept Bolles uses to describe finding the perfect job for anyone based on their strengths and weaknesses. We shouldn’t use personality or occupation tests we find online, because they can only tell us what other people in our position want to work as, which leads to unsatisfactory results. Instead, we must take the time to get to know ourselves, because finding the perfect career doesn’t happen overnight.

It’s on us to decide what we’re willing to compromise on and what a job must have to be an ideal fit. Our priorities—such as whether we want flexible hours or to use different skills— can and will change over time, and we should be prepared to embrace that change. It’s all about knowing how to adapt and shift our outlook. Although we can find a dream job, that doesn’t mean this job will tick all our boxes indefinitely. There are, in other words, many dream jobs.

Once we know all about ourselves, we can turn to job searching. Google, social media, and other online platforms are as important as our resumes. Employers often search for us online before interviewing us, so we must ensure that our online presence is professional and honest. What’s more, we should use the internet to network and build contacts within our chosen industries to improve our chances of meeting the “right” employer.

The latter sections of What Color Is Your Parachute?focus on what happens when a jobseeker reaches the interview stage. We should remember that HR representatives and employers want to find the right candidate, but they’re also looking for reasons to not hire someone. Although we shouldn’t oversell ourselves, we must demonstrate how passionate we are about the opportunity and why we’re the ideal candidate. We can’t afford to blend in with the other applicants if we want to get hired—that’s why networking is so important.

Bolles closes by offering us alternatives, such as self-employment, if we don’t want to work for anyone else. Again, it’s important that we take time to understand what we’re trying to achieve and what will make us happy before taking the bold step of working for ourselves. Bolles’s philosophies are a mixture of optimism and pragmatism.
