Tyrell says that Jett’s candy business is thriving. Almost all the kids at the Oasis are now his customers, although Grace disapproves of the entire lucrative venture. The members of Team Lizard are all pitching in to care for Needles, who has continued to grow and nips at people more often as he gets bigger. One day, Jett and Tyrell take the boat to make a supply run to Hedge Apple. They need to replenish their candy inventory and get some raw meat for Needles. While in town, the boys decide to take a closer look at the mysterious mansion. They duck out of sight when a sports car comes speeding toward them down the dirt road that leads to the house. Its driver is obscured by the dust cloud he leaves in his wake, but Jett points out that his Ferrari costs half a million dollars.

Knowing that Snapper isn’t home gives the boys an opportunity to creep up to the mansion. They see three young men with the physiques of football players coming into view. They are covered in mud, and one of them is sporting some bloody cuts as they all hose each other down outside the building.
