Long Answer

1. June understands failure as falling short of other people’s expectations, like when she falls short of becoming the prodigy her mother wants. Suyuan understands failure occurs when one does not try one’s best to accomplish a task or goal, as in June’s active refusal to learn piano. (Paragraph 79)

2. Because Suyuan keeps the piano and offers it to June, June is not correct in thinking her mother has given up hope for her. Instead, Suyuan waits patiently for June to come to her own understanding of the conflict between them, even if she is not still living when it happens. Suyuan’s resolve shows hope that her daughter will forgive her. (Paragraph 82)
