Long Answer

1. Initially, it appears as though nothing miraculous has happened, because Edward is able to think just as the dolls are. The first miracle that occurs is when Edward is on the ocean floor and is caught by a fisher’s net during a storm. The second miracle of Edward’s journey is when he is dug from the trash pile by Lucy. Edward later changes ownership with three other people before he miraculously sees Pellegrina on the streets of Memphis. Perhaps the most miraculous event in Edward’s journey is his return to Abilene through her daughter Maggie. The concept of a miracle in the novel may have a slightly negative connotation when compared to other miracles, but ultimately Edward is given the greatest gift of all, his capacity to love. 2. At the beginning of the novel, Edward enjoys looking at his reflection in the window while Abilene is away at school. He believes he is like the princess in Pellegrina’s story because she is described as shining as bright as a star on a moonless night.
