Activity

Use these activities to engage all types of learners, while requiring that they refer to and incorporate details from the text over the course of the activity.

ACTIVITY: The Transformation Narrative Bubble Chart

Transformation narratives have existed since before Greek myth and persist to this day, and they come in many different types (body swap comedies, body horror, werewolves, Animorphs, etc.).

As a class, brainstorm the different types of transformations that happen in narratives and use a bubble chart to organize them. What do different types of transformation represent, and where does The Metamorphosis fit into your chart?

After brainstorming and discussion in the group setting, write an analysis of 1-2 paragraph(s) of the class’s thought process and decision-making strategies for organizing titles and types of transformation. In your writing, detail whether or not you agree with the group’s placement of The Metamorphosis. Discuss your rationale; if you think the book placement’s in the chart belongs elsewhere, explain.
