According to MiguelRuiz.com, Don Miguel Ruiz was the youngest of 13 children born in rural Mexico into a family of Toltec healers. His mother was a healer, and his grandfather was a Shaman. Although his family expected Ruiz to embrace and contribute to their healing and teaching legacy, Ruiz instead decided to pursue modern medicine and become a neurosurgeon, working in Tijuana with his brother.

In his late twenties, Ruiz fell asleep while driving. At the moment the car crashed into a wall, Ruiz recalls being able to see himself from outside his body while his physical self was helping his two friends to safety. This experience was the catalyst for Ruiz’s exploration of ancient wisdom. Ruiz returned to his family’s teachings and began to study intensively with his mother, eventually completing an apprenticeship with an important shaman in Mexico. His studies led Ruiz to his own understanding of the physical and spiritual worlds.
