Chapter 21 Summary: “Maeve: Monday, March 23”

Knox and Phoebe meet Maeve in the drama club office, where he tells them about his conversation with Nate concerning the construction site. Knox asks them if they think someone was targeting Brandon by giving him that specific dare. Phoebe is shocked someone would do such a thing, and Knox wonders if it was Sean. Maeve thinks back to what Lucy said, that everyone knows how to play the game now—just take dare (197). Maeve says she doesn’t think it was Sean, since he’s more of an in-your-face bully and a short-term thinker (197). This conversation intrigues Maeve, and she turns the PingMe back on to keep track of the forum. But when she looks at her phone, she sees that Dr. Gutierrez called. Phoebe and Knox give her privacy, but say they’ll be right on the other side of the door. Dr. Gutierrez tells her the blood test is normal and her remission is not compromised. Maeve feels “light-headed and boneless” (198). She begins to cry. The doctor says the bruises and nosebleeds are from an iron deficiency that is easy to fix with some vitamins. Phoebe comes back in and tells her they’re so happy she’s okay.
