Italo Calvino was an Italian author whose works are characterized by a blend of magical realism, postmodernism, and the deconstruction of language. Calvino’s literary career began with his first novel, The Path to the Nest of Spiders (1947), a war novel that drew from his experiences in the Italian Resistance. However, in the postwar period he gained international recognition for his unique style, blending elements of surrealism, magic realism, and postmodernism. His early works, such as The Cloven Viscount (1952) and The Nonexistent Knight (1959), showcased his ability to craft fantastical narratives and to explore the boundaries of reality and fiction.
