"Men in My Family" by Jordan Bailey (2019)
An up-and-coming spoken word artist, Jordan Bailey’s poem “Men in My Family” is an emotional appeal to interrogate toxic masculinity in our own families. Bailey’s poem contains many of the same references to socially learned norms that appear in Geter’s “Good Man,” as well as similar questions about the possible goodness of any man.
"Wonder Woman" by Angelo Geter (2018)
In this poem, Geter articulates some similar thematic points like in “Good Man.” He discusses relationships between men and women through the lens of his relationship with his own mother. “Wonder Woman” also contains some similar elements of rhythm and allusion to Geter’s other works.
"The Type" by Sarah Kay (2015)
One of the most prominent spoken word artists in contemporary slam, Sarah Kay’s poem “The Type” has some themes in common with Geter’s “Good Man,” as well as some similar structural choices. In “The Type,” which addresses negative aspects of masculinity from a woman’s perspective, Kay employs juxtaposition as a core format for her poem’s structure.
