Two central themes of the book are Turning a Disadvantage Into an Advantage and Change Inspired by Kindness and Diversity. Give one example of a text-to-self connection and one example of either a text-to-text or a text-to-world connection of an act of kindness that made someone’s life better. Describe the circumstances and explain how the people changed and who or what helped them.

Teaching Suggestion: You can use this video to review the three types of connections. Students may find making a text-to-world connection challenging. This History Channel story, “12 Times People Confronted a Crisis With Kindness,” could be a good asset to help them answer the question.
