Coraline Sequel”

In this activity, students will create a plot summary of the sequel for the novel Coraline using details from the text.

Although Neil Gaiman says there are no hopes for a follow up to Coraline, the novel's conclusion does leave room for a possible sequel. Use details from the novel and your own creative thinking to create a plot summary of the sequel to Coraline. Consider using the questions below to inform your sequel.

  • What is the name of the novel’s sequel?
  • Who is your novel’s antagonist?
  • How might the other mother escape the well with the key?
  • What might Coraline do to defeat the antagonist with her wits?
  • What is Coraline’s relationship with her parents like?
  • What roles will the cat, Mr. Bobo, Miss Spink, and Miss Forcible play?
  • How might you continue the novel’s themes of What It Means to be Brave, The Drawbacks of Getting What You Want, and The Importance of Having Allies?

Present your summary to peers, drawing connections to the novel.

Teaching Suggestion: Students may wish to add additional characters to the plot and/or create a new antagonist for their sequel.
